Most myths are harmless. Rubber takes seven years to digest. Sharks do not get cancer. Lightning never hits the same place twice. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for most SEO myths. At least they are misleading. At worst, they lead you to waste precious time, money and resources on things that never improve SEO.
So let's destroy common SEO myths once and for all.
This is probably the biggest myth which is pure nonsense, it is worth destroying this ridiculous SEO myth to begin with. This phrase has been used 10,161 times on various websites since June 2016.
SEO can be compared to going to the gym, it's okay to skip a workout here and there, but if you sit at home for a long time and eat fast food in front of the TV, then things start to fall apart.
Is this true for absolutely all websites? No. There are rare instances where a website can be forgotten for years and continue to draw uniform traffic volume month after month.
But this is not often as there are always new competitors coming in the market.
So why do we all invest so much in keeping our content fresh if freshness is a myth?
'Freshness' is a query dependent location factor. This means that it means more to some queries than others. It all depends on whether the freshness of the content has any influence on the quality of the content.
SEO is constantly evolving, so freshness matters to many SEO related queries as an example.
Most people think that longtail keywords are made up of many words, but this is not entirely true. Longtail keywords are low search volume queries. The number of words does not matter.
But here's the thing: even though longtails get few monthly searches, they are usually no easier to rank than more popular keywords.
Duplicate content is where exactly or almost identical content is displayed in more than one place. It can be on the same site or across multiple sites.
Google has said that there is no duplicate content penalty on several occasions, but there are many who do not know and still say that it provides punishment.
Although duplicate content does not get you penalized, it can cause SEO problems, it is important that you know.
Given that most pages rank on hundreds or thousands of keywords, it is hardly surprising that some people think that keyword research is dead. What's the point of optimizing for a keyword when you're likely getting traffic from hundreds of them?
This is a flawed logic because a keyword's popularity usually matches the topic's overall search traffic potential.
Keyword Research also helps ensure that you optimize for the most popular way to search on a topic. This is important if you want to attract as much organic traffic to your website as possible.
Does this list contain all the myths? No! It will be impossible to make a list of all the myths as it would be longer than here from and to the moon.
In our view, this list is the most important myths that we think should be destroyed.
